    • @statuscheckwithspivey

      Great question! No, since the timeframe of transfer admissions is much shorter and you are competing for many fewer spots, timing can be much more important in some cases.

    Love all of your videos, always so informative and interesting!! I am going to start law school this year and your videos have really helped me understand law school during my admission process and also what to expect as a law student. Have you ever considered making a video discussing the difference between ABA accredited law schools and non-ABA accredited law schools? I am curious in how this difference in school accreditation may have on the impact in employability. Thanks!

      I'm glad you've found our videos helpful! We also have a blog and a TikTok that you can always check out for more advice and info. That said, most of what we talk about is targeted toward applications to ABA-approved schools, and excepting really unusual circumstances (e.g. you only ever intend to practice in one jurisdiction and you already have a job lined up for after graduation), we typically strongly recommend attending an ABA-approved school if at all possible. I hope that's helpful! -Anna

    I can't imagine being the person who decides if a person gets to have a happy and successful life, based on razor thin margins. "Oh, your application is a little cluttered and your GPA is a fraction of a point too low? Ho-hum.....I dunno. You went out of your way to volunteer your time in a 3rd world country? Yeah, who hasn't? Maybe you're better off making 40k a year as a substitute teacher?"

    Isn't it a misnomer to suggest that schools are "giving out money?" Unless it is a stipend that a student can put in the bank or put in their pocket, they are not receiving anything from the school other than a discount. The schools are choosing to waive a predetermined amount of tuition for desirable candidates while displacing the cost onto the shoulders of those who will be stuck paying full tuition. Namely, the students who just barely scraped their way through the admissions process. Seems like not much more than a way for schools to bait the students they need to maintain their rankings. So, who needs who? Does the student need that school, or is it the school that needs the student? I think the answer is obvious.

    Mike, do you have a suggestion for what to do if someone left out a GPA on the part of the application where some schools ask (even though it is shown on transcript) and/or left out the parents’ info when asked (in a case where both are mentioned in the PS so it isn’t a case where the student didn’t omit the info because they aren’t in contact, etc.) My concern is it looks sloppy but not sure if a letter brings undue attention. Thanks!

  • @anonyesq
    @anonyesq 6 місяців тому

    Okay…. Neurotic question. Just realize that on some apps I left my parents’ info blank (even though I discuss them in my personal statement). Others I neglected to write my GPA on the online form. (And yeah, I know they’ll have the transcript so they can find it…. Which makes me wonder why some of these schools even ask it.) Could you kindly give me your thoughts on whether it is worth a letter to admissions to correct either of these mistakes, saying that I noticed them upon reviewing them? My concern is the admissions will see these and think I did a sloppy application, even though the answers are available to them elsewhere. I’m thinking a brief and professional letter might be good, but maybe it calls undue attention to them or makes me look like a weirdo. HELP!! Thanks 😊

      I would likely not contact them in your shoes; those questions are optional, and while we advise people to fill them out, it's a feather on the scale, and it would be a bit odd to reach out to them to clarify (especially with the GPA bit). I would just not worry about it honestly! Best of luck! -Anna from Spivey Consulting

    It took me three years to get into law School way back in 1992. I graduated in 1996. I am grateful for my job and love my career as a Family Lawyer ---- and I remain convinced that I could never pass an LSAT. I wrote the LSAT three times and never got higher than the 55 percentile. I often joke that the only reason I got accepted into Law School was because the Admissions office got tired of seeing my application. Lol. Incidentally, what I lacked in an LSAT score I supplemented with volunteer work for various legal organizations and good references. One final comment: When I finally got into Law School I was stunned to discover that while challenging, it was not difficult. To this day, the three LSAT exams remain the most difficult tests I ever took in my academic life. I took numerous LSAT preparation courses and none of them helped. In fact, I have vivid memories of arguing with the "LSAT Prep" teacher over what the "more correct" answer was. I learned nothing other than the BS nature of the LSAT and how utterly useless it is as a marker for whether or not one can become a successful lawyer. Obviously I remain biased against the use of the LSAT even 26 years later. I firmly believe that a greater variety of lawyers would result if they removed the LSAT as an admissions tool.

  • @shepburn4755

    I laughed through this because there were so many issues with it. First, two white males. No females. No URMs. People who have high GPAs from "elite" schools are not really equal to students who go to rigorous universities who DONT curve! So a 3.4 from a top business school could be equal to a 3.8 at a top liberal arts school. It's all so ridiculous that you have to depend on a faculty member for admission. I think people who work for several years out of undergrad, as well as work during the summers from freshman year, in substantive jobs are more impressive than someone coming straight out of Univ esp if they have an excellent recommendations. Judging by some of the famous people Yale has admitted over the last 40 yrs, they don't have a very good track record.

  • @shepburn4755
    @shepburn4755 6 місяців тому

    And yet Yale says right on their Law school website that they take a "holistic" approach to every application. That is BS. You can have a compelling story and be a great writer, but went to a tough undergrad that doesn't curve their grades like the ivy league schools do. I had HS acquaintances at Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown and all their grades were curved. They're brand ambassadors now. It's ridiculous.

    Thanks for the insight. I'm one of those slow appliers. You mentioned the applications intra-school being so different and that has absolutely slowed me down. I'm applying to a decent number of schools and was not prepared for how many a) revisions to my "universal" short essay answer and b) unique additional short essays for each school I'd have to do. I've even had to tweak my personal statement for a few schools. I don't know what applications were like in past but I definitely expected more similarity between schools. I'm glad the cycle overall is slower and that I'm still doing ok on my timeline. I've been stressed about not getting my apps in weeks ago like I'd originally planned.
